The transcription of these stories was excellent as Hawaiian words and local slang was immediately interpreted, making it easy to understand. Each chapter is dedicated to a theme such as fi|About the Author|The authors are two retired Hawaiian language and history teachers, both with family ties to Kalapana.

There once was a village of Kalapana on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It had a world renowned black sand beach and was a predominantly Hawaiian community. Lava now covers Kalapana and these are stories told by people who once lived there in their youth.
