For the period prior to 1949, it misses the sights, sounds and flavor of the real Shanghai. Where are the compradors, social elite, the expats, the many parties, Wing On department store? It would have made an interesting comparison with the post-1949 period, which captures the flavor of Shanghai under the PRC.
